The World Water Council has condemned reported attacks on drinking water production facilities serving civilians in the Middle East, expressing deep concern over recent incidents targeting critical water infrastructure.
According to corroborating reports, several facilities responsible for producing drinking water for civilian populations were attacked in recent hours.
The council warned that such actions threaten access to safe water and place vulnerable populations at serious risk.
Citing provisions under the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions (1977), the council emphasized that international humanitarian law prohibits attacks on objects indispensable to the survival of civilians, including food sources, agricultural areas, livestock, drinking water installations, and irrigation systems.
The organization called on all parties involved in the conflict to respect their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of water and sanitation infrastructure.
According to the World Water Council, access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental human right essential for life and human dignity.
