GIZ, NEMSA strengthen partnership on renewable energy standards

By Abdullahi Lukman

The German Development Cooperation, implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining its partnership with the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to support renewable energy development and strengthen standards in Nigeria’s power sector.

This assurance was given during a courtesy visit by a GIZ delegation to the agency on Wednesday as part of activities under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP).

Speaking during the visit, the leader of the GIZ delegation, Milot Karid, praised the longstanding collaboration between the two institutions, noting that the partnership has contributed significantly to improving regulatory standards and technical capacity within Nigeria’s electricity sector.

According to him, the engagement aimed to strengthen ongoing cooperation between NEMSA and the Nigerian Energy Support Programme, particularly in areas such as renewable energy development, regulatory standards and capacity building for the country’s electricity industry.

Karid highlighted key achievements recorded through the partnership, including the development of the Guidelines for the Inspection and Certification of Solar Mini-Grids in Nigeria.

He added that the collaboration has also supported specialised training programmes designed to enhance the technical capacity of NEMSA personnel in ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards in Nigeria’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector.

Responding, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NEMSA, Olusegun Adesayo, who also serves as the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to promoting electrical safety, quality assurance and regulatory compliance within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Adesayo expressed appreciation to GIZ and the European Union for their continued support toward strengthening Nigeria’s power sector.

He noted that the next phase of the collaboration would include the formal launch of the solar mini-grid inspection guidelines as well as deeper cooperation in advancing renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency and rural electrification across the country.

The Nigerian Energy Support Programme is a technical assistance initiative co-funded by the European Union and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and implemented by GIZ in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Power.

Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable energy solutions, improving standards in renewable energy deployment and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a safer, more efficient and sustainable electricity sector.
