NCJA adopts five-year plan to advance climate justice
By Abdullahi Lukman
The Nigeria Climate Justice Alliance (NCJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting climate justice, unveiling a five-year Strategic Action Plan aimed at strengthening coordination, amplifying community voices, and influencing climate policy in Nigeria.
The resolution was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the alliance’s 2026–2030 Strategic Action Plan Review and Coordination Workshop held in Abuja from February 16 to 17, 2026.
The communiqué was jointly signed by representatives of member organisations, including the Nigeria Conservation Foundation, Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation, and Sustainable Action, among others.
In the document, the coalition pledged to advance climate justice by strengthening grassroots participation, protecting ecosystems, promoting equity, and holding duty-bearers accountable.
It emphasized the need for inclusive and sustainable climate responses that prioritize vulnerable populations and address structural inequalities.
The alliance noted that climate change continues to deepen social and economic disparities across Nigeria, disproportionately affecting frontline communities with limited resilience.
It expressed concern that poverty and limited livelihood options often push women, youth, and local communities into environmentally harmful practices such as deforestation, further intensifying climate risks and perpetuating vulnerability.
Members identified weak coordination among civil society actors as a major obstacle to effective climate advocacy and equitable access to climate finance.
The newly adopted action plan, they said, is designed to enhance collaboration, strengthen collective influence on policy processes, and improve internal governance and accountability mechanisms.
As part of the strategy, NCJA agreed to establish functional working committees on public advocacy, resource mobilisation, knowledge and capacity building, and coordination.
The coalition also resolved to develop a joint action roadmap with clear priorities, timelines, and responsibilities to guide its interventions.
The group stressed that climate justice must be people-centred, gender-inclusive, and responsive to the needs of persons with disabilities.
It called on government institutions, development partners, the private sector, and the media to support transparent and inclusive climate action.
The alliance affirmed that its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan will serve as the framework for coordinated advocacy, joint resource mobilisation, and strengthened partnerships aimed at promoting a just transition and community-driven climate solutions across Nigeria.
