Delta State has inaugurated a steering committee to promote responsible investment in land-intensive agriculture, aiming to attract large-scale agribusiness while safeguarding local communities and the environment.
The ceremony, held in Asaba, was led by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, who represented Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and chairs the newly formed committee.
Onyeme said the initiative is intended to improve the investment climate in the state’s agricultural sector, making it easier for investors to operate while ensuring that land-based projects are carried out responsibly.
He urged committee members to uphold transparency in land acquisition and resettlement processes, protect the rights of land tenure holders, ensure fair compensation, promote environmental sustainability, and encourage inclusive agricultural models.
Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Val Areyinka and Director General of the Delta State Investment Development Agency Anthony Elekeokuri said the framework aligns with a US$750 million World Bank-supported programme.
Access to these funds is tied to performance and the achievement of benchmarks set by development partners.
To support the steering committee, a 20-member technical committee was inaugurated to provide professional guidance, alongside a 6-member grievance and redress committee tasked with handling complaints and disputes related to land acquisition and allocation for agribusiness projects.
Officials said that effective implementation of the framework would position Delta State to benefit from international financing, enhance sustainable agribusiness development, and strengthen the state’s reputation as a hub for responsible large-scale agriculture.
