Altitude secures 360,000 tonnes biochar carbon removal certificates

By Abbas Nazil

Altitude, a leading carbon removal financier, has announced a major commitment to procure over 360,000 tonnes of CO₂ Removal Certificates from biochar facilities in India and the Philippines, with the first deliveries scheduled to begin in 2026.

The CO₂ Removal Certificates, or CORCs, will be issued on Puro.earth or equivalent registries, ensuring traceability, verification, and adherence to high-integrity standards within the engineered carbon removal market.

The agreement supports Asia’s growing role in carbon removal while linking climate mitigation with waste management, rural development, and long-duration environmental benefits.

Biochar production facilities in Manila and New Delhi use advanced pyrolysis technology to convert agricultural residues into carbon-rich biochar, a stable material capable of storing carbon in soils for centuries.

Beyond permanent carbon sequestration, the process delivers additional benefits including improved soil fertility, reduction of open burning of agricultural waste, and the creation of local economic opportunities in rural communities.

The projects operate under strict sustainability and verification standards, addressing key concerns in voluntary carbon markets around permanence, additionality, and monitoring, making biochar one of the most mature and durable carbon removal pathways currently available.

Daniel Benjamin Schulz, CEO of Altitude, emphasized that the partnership with Alcom strengthens the company’s ability to provide corporates with verified, traceable removals at scale, while supporting climate-aligned infrastructure development in emerging markets where mitigation finance is limited.

Alcom’s leadership highlighted that the initiative will accelerate high-quality carbon removal capacity, promote sustainable agricultural practices, reduce open burning, and generate durable climate assets suitable for global buyers.

The partnership reflects a broader trend in carbon removal development, focusing on emerging markets where feedstock availability, land-use dynamics, and cost advantages can enable scalable deployment, provided governance, verification, and community engagement frameworks are robust.

The deal underscores critical structural trends in the carbon removal market, including the need for high-integrity supply, registry compliance, and geographic diversification to support corporate net-zero strategies and long-term climate mitigation.
