The World Bank has announced plans to expand irrigation and agriculture projects in Gombe State to strengthen food security, improve water management, and boost climate resilience.
Chakib Jenane, Regional Director for Sustainable Development for Western and Central Africa, confirmed the plans on Thursday during a visit to Deputy Governor Manassah Jatau.
Jenane said the Bank’s renewed commitment reflects Gombe’s progress in implementing existing projects. “We are impressed by what we have seen here. Your achievements encourage us to do more,” he said.
The new support will focus on the SPIN project, aimed at expanding irrigation and improving water use for farmers. Jenane added that discussions have begun on a future programme targeting agriculture and agribusiness development in the state.
During the visit, the team reviewed ongoing projects including SURWASH, L-PRES, and ACReSAL. Jenane said seeing results on the ground allowed the Bank to better understand local needs and identify areas requiring deeper support.
Deputy Governor Jatau praised the Bank’s role in mitigating environmental challenges, including saving critical infrastructure from erosion. He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to partnership, noting that the collaboration will help bridge infrastructure gaps and improve livelihoods.
The SPIN project, valued at $500 million, is designed to deliver multi-purpose infrastructure for irrigation and hydropower generation nationwide, supporting farmers and enhancing sustainable agriculture in Gombe and beyond.
