Africans favour climate education as key to combating climate change – NatureNews Poll

By Abbas Nazil

A fresh social media poll by NatureNews Africa has revealed that a majority of Africans believe climate education is the most effective way to combat climate change on the continent.

According to the poll conducted across NatureNews Africa’s social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn, 54 percent of respondents voted in favor of climate education as the best approach to addressing the escalating climate crisis in Africa.

Tree planting and reforestation came in second place with 33 percent of the votes, showing continued public support for afforestation efforts aimed at restoring degraded lands and capturing atmospheric carbon.

Meanwhile, 13 percent of participants believed that strengthening environmental laws and policies would make the most significant difference in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Surprisingly, none of the respondents voted for transitioning to clean energy as a priority approach, despite global advocacy for renewable energy as a crucial step in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The outcome of the poll highlights a growing public perception that awareness and education remain central to achieving meaningful climate action in Africa.

Environmental experts have often emphasized that education equips individuals and communities with the knowledge to adopt sustainable lifestyles, hold policymakers accountable, and drive grassroots solutions.

NatureNews Africa, a media platform dedicated to environmental journalism and sustainability reporting, said the poll was part of its efforts to gauge public opinion on climate priorities and encourage more people to participate in climate discussions across the continent.

The result underscores a strong belief that informed citizens are the foundation of Africa’s path toward climate resilience and sustainable development.
