The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has announced plans to introduce electric vehicles (EVs) across 12 Nigerian tertiary institutions by November to reduce carbon emissions and ease student mobility on campuses.
Arc. Sonny Echono, TETFund’s Executive Secretary, revealed that the initiative supports President Tinubu’s agenda to improve student welfare while promoting cleaner, greener transportation solutions.
Managed by students for accountability, the EVs will be complemented by charging stations installed on campuses to ensure smooth and sustainable operation.
This green transport project aligns with the federal government’s broader interventions to upgrade power supply, accommodation, and learning infrastructure sustainably in tertiary institutions.
Investments in eco-friendly student hostels and energy-efficient facilities are also underway, with several projects set to be commissioned starting December.
The rollout comes amid increasing efforts to reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint in education and foster environmental responsibility among young people.
TETFund is, Echono said, is also boosting support for research laboratories and digital learning systems, emphasizing sustainable power projects to strengthen Nigeria’s educational and environmental resilience.
