Smart Energies expands clean energy access in Nigeria

By Abdullahi Lukman

Smart Energies, a domestic energy solutions provider, has announced a major expansion beyond clean cooking gas into renewable energy and electric mobility, aiming to improve access, affordability, and sustainability across Nigeria’s energy sector.

The company has introduced a range of new offerings including electric motorcycles, solar-powered charging stations, cooking gas subsidy cards, and a mobile app to connect households and communities with clean energy services nationwide.

These initiatives are part of a broader growth strategy aimed at redefining energy access through innovation and social impact.

Chief Executive Officer, Yinka Opeke, explained that the expansion aligns with Smart Energies’ commitment to support government efforts to deepen energy access and drive mass adoption of clean fuels.

She said the company’s latest innovations—particularly in electric mobility—are designed to empower Nigerians, offering flexible rental and lease-to-own options for electric motorcycles, enabling adoption without high upfront costs.

To tackle rising household energy costs, Smart Energies also launched prepaid subsidy cards that allow families to access cooking gas at discounted rates.

Opeke highlighted this initiative as a key measure to prevent a return to harmful fuels like firewood, thereby supporting environmental protection and public health.

Opeke added that the company’s operations are guided by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Past campaigns like “Trash-for-Gas,” which distributed over 70,000 LPG cylinders, and community safety training have put people at the center of its efforts.

The new Smart Energies mobile app integrates services for clients, drivers, and gas retailers, enabling real-time access to clean and affordable energy across all 36 states and the FCT.

Calling for collaboration, Opeke urged governments, development partners, investors, and private sector players to partner with Smart Energies in scaling sustainable energy solutions.

“The challenges of market development are too vast for any single entity. We’re built on partnerships and believe collective action is essential for lasting impact,” she said.
