Jigawa LGA builds tunnel to curb flooding

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Hadejia Local Government in Jigawa State has commenced the construction of a three-kilometre tunnel designed to divert excess water from a local pond to the Hadejia River, in a bid to tackle recurring floods in the area.

According to a statement by the council’s Information Officer, Muhammad Talaki, the project was officially inaugurated by the council chairman, Alhaji Ahmed Abba-Ari, and is valued at approximately ₦60 million.

Abba-Ari said the initiative aims to provide a long-term solution to the annual flooding around the Jaribola pond, which has consistently damaged farmlands, displaced residents, and disrupted economic activities in the area.

“This tunnel is expected to significantly reduce the impact of seasonal flooding and improve water management,” he said, reaffirming the council’s commitment to protecting lives and livelihoods through sustainable infrastructure.

The Head of the Works Department, Alhaji Muhammad Ubale, assured that the contractor would carry out the project according to the agreed terms and standards.

Flooding remains a serious issue in Jigawa State, with heavy rainfall and overflowing rivers displacing thousands in recent years.
