By Abdullahi Lukman

The Abia State Government has commenced a massive desilting of blocked drainages across the state following a flood alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).

This was disclosed on Monday in Umuahia by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing on the outcome of the weekly State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu stated that the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is currently working round the clock in different parts of Aba and Umuahia to clear blocked drains and prevent flooding.

He emphasized the risks posed by clogged drainages, especially during heavy rainfall, and urged residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

He also revealed that the state will participate in the 2025 World Cleanup Day on September 25. According to him, ASEPA is collaborating with stakeholder groups and partners to ensure the success of this year’s event.

Kanu further encouraged residents to support the government’s vision of making Abia the cleanest state in Nigeria.

The commissioner said the launch of Sanitary Inspection Services in August 2025, aimed at enhancing environmental hygiene across the state, adding that inspectors have so far visited about 4,500 premises in 85 communities.

He cautioned them against extortion, urging that only approved environmental fines be enforced.

The State Executive Council has approved a statewide tree-planting campaign as part of its “Go Green” initiative.

The project is expected to mitigate erosion, enhance public health, promote urban beautification, attract investment, and boost tourism.
