Anxiety as Kano’s Tiga Dam reaches critical capacity level

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Hadejia–Jama’are River Basin Development Authority has raised an alarm over rising water levels at the Tiga Dam in Kano State, warning that the dam has reached critical capacity.

According to officials, the dam is already overflowing, and a controlled release of water will soon be necessary to prevent structural damage and possible flooding.

As a result, communities living along the riverbanks have been strongly advised to move to higher ground and stay on alert.

“We urge residents to take immediate precautions and cooperate with emergency directives,” the Authority said in a statement on Sunday.

“The safety of lives and property is our top priority.”

In addition to evacuation warnings, the Authority is also advising local communities to inspect and reinforce weak points in embankments and dikes to reduce the risk of breaches.

While assuring the public of its readiness to manage the situation, the Authority called for calm, vigilance, and cooperation, offering prayers for the safety of all those who may be affected by the rising water levels.
