By Abdullahi Lukman

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) commenced its 62nd session in Hangzhou, China, on Monday, February 24, 2025, amidst urgent calls for accelerated climate action.

The five-day meeting, the first of 2025, opened with stark warnings from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) regarding record-breaking global temperatures in 2024, emphasizing the narrowing window to limit warming to 1.5°C.

During the session, delegates are reviewing key elements of the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), including draft outlines for Working Group Reports and a Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies.

Host country representatives highlighted China’s progress in transitioning to a low-carbon society and reaffirmed their commitment to international climate science cooperation.

UN dignitaries, including IPCC Chair Jim Skea, UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiel, and WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett, delivered opening remarks stressing the urgency of the climate crisis.

They called for scientific integrity, global collaboration, and increased climate finance, particularly for adaptation efforts.

The meeting will address the IPCC’s budget, the scoping of AR7, and the outline of the Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies report.

China reiterated its commitment to the IPCC and its participation in global climate initiatives. Delegates began deliberations in a closed session following the opening ceremony.
