Food Security, Unemployment: Nigeria Launches Youth Farmers Enrollment Portal
By Abdullahi Lukman
The federal government has unveiled the Youth Farmers Enrollment Portal, a new initiative aimed at addressing the dual challenges of unemployment and food insecurity in Nigeria.
A statement by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, says the portal is part of the Nigerian Youth Economic Engagement and De-Radicalisation Programme, a broader effort to integrate young people into the country’s economic fabric.
Targeting Nigerians aged 18 to 35, the portal offers a range of resources, including agricultural training, modern farming techniques, mentorship, and financial support to help youth start or scale agricultural ventures.
The initiative is designed not only to provide economic opportunities for young people but also to strengthen the agricultural sector, which remains a critical part of the Nigerian economy.
Olawande emphasized that the program aligns with the economic priorities of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
“This intervention is not just about increasing food production,” he said, explaining, “It is about empowering young Nigerians with sustainable skills, creating jobs in both rural and urban areas, and ensuring the welfare and security of our citizens.”
The program aims to help reduce unemployment, particularly in rural regions, while contributing to broader national goals of food security and economic growth. END
