Harmattan: CAMIC Proffers Preventive Measures to Respiratory Ailments

By Obiabin Onukwugha

As the harmattan season sets in, an environmental advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has urged individuals, communities, and governments to adopt proactive measures that mitigate respiratory ailments.

The harmattan, characterized by dry and dusty winds, poses significant health risks, particularly respiratory illnesses, due to the influx of fine dust particles into the air.

In a statement signed by Pius Alabi, CAMIC suggested such measures as use of nose masks, staying indoors, using air purifiers, drinking lots of water and seeking prompt medical attention, as ways of coping with the harmattan season.

“Wearing face masks or wrapping a clean scarf over the nose and mouth can help filter out dust particles and prevent inhalation of pollutants,” the statement said, advising people to limit outdoor activities during peak dusty periods to reduce exposure.

“Use air purifiers, wet mop floors regularly, and keep windows closed to minimize the amount of dust entering your home and drink plenty of water to keep your respiratory system hydrated and consume foods rich in vitamins to boost immunity.

“Lastly, if symptoms such as persistent cough, wheezing, or difficulty breathing occur, consult a healthcare professional immediately,” the statement read in part.

CAMIC called on relevant government and health agencies to adequately educate citizens on harmattan-related health risks and prevention measures through media channels and community outreach programs.

CAMIC emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders, including environmental agencies, health organizations, and media partners, to amplify harmattan safety messages and mitigate its health impacts.

“As we navigate this harmattan season, let us prioritize the health and well-being of our communities by implementing these practical measures,” the center advised.
