Advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC), has called for immediate ban on black-colored plastic cookware in Nigeria.
CAMIC stated that the call became imperative as black-coloured plastic cookware have been linked to health implications.
The body made the call in a statement issued by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, in Abuja on Thursday.
The body urged policymakers, manufacturers, and consumers to take swift action to eliminate the use of the cookware.

It stressed that black plastic cookware, often derived from recycled electronic waste, contains harmful substances such as heavy metals, flame retardants, and toxic chemicals.
“Studies reveal that these toxins can leach into food when exposed to heat, posing serious risks to human health, including hormonal disruption, organ damage, and increased cancer risks,” the statement warned.
“The threat is particularly acute for vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and those with compromised immunity,” CAMIC warned further, saying, “Black plastic cookware is a silent but deadly contributor to the growing health crises in our communities.”
It said the toxic materials not only endanger public health but also contribute to environmental pollution during production and disposal. We must act now to safeguard our future.
The body also warne consumers to avoid purchasing black plastic cookwares and instead, opt for eco-friendly and safe alternatives.
It appealed to civil society organizations to amplify public awareness campaigns about the dangers of black plastic cookware and advocate for policy change.
While reiterating its commitment to educating communities about the harmful effects of hazardous plastics and promoting sustainable alternatives, the body announced plans to roll out an awareness campaign, including workshops, media engagements, and partnerships with health and environmental groups, to ensure the message reaches every corner of society.
