Lagos State Govt Plans Mega Walk-for-nature Roadshow

By Faridat Salifu

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF), will hold the 18th annual ‘Walk for Nature’ on Saturday, October 19, 2024, as part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation.

The event underscores the government’s commitment to planting one million trees over the next 12 months, according to the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.

Speaking at a recent press conference Wahab outlined the dual focus of the initiative: nature conservation and improving the quality of life for Lagosians.

He emphasized that the state’s greening policy is designed not just to plant trees but to ensure the long-term sustainability of these efforts.

The 2024 walk, themed “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” highlights the critical importance of environmental stewardship for future generations.

Wahab noted that the annual collaboration with the NCF, which began in 2008, has played a key role in raising awareness around environmental issues in Lagos.

The walk is not only a symbol of the state’s commitment to conservation but also promotes healthy living and physical fitness among participants. Wahab invited residents to join the 3km walk, which will start from Onikan Stadium at 7:15 a.m.

NCF Director-General, Dr. Joseph Onoja, praised the ongoing partnership, stating that it has led to greater public consciousness around conservation.

He highlighted the urgency of the global push for ecosystem restoration, noting that protecting nature is essential to safeguarding human existence.

The event is expected to draw a large crowd of participants, including key officials from the NCF and the state’s Ministry of Environment.
