Commercial Bus Operators in Lagos Scramble for Conversion From Petrol to CNG
Following the distribution of kits to Lagos State by the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNG-i) for conversion of petrol powered vehicles to CNG vehicles in the state, drivers and owners of petrol run commercial cars and buses have been trooping to approved conversion centres across the state for conversion of their vehicles.
Recall that following the distribution of the conversion kits to the relevant authority in the state, motorists were advised to visit approved conversion centres to have their vehicles converted free of charge.
NatureNews monitoring of the development in Lagos shows that motorists, particularly commercial car (taxi) operators and some commercial bus operators who are members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) have trooped to the centres aiming to be converted free of charge.
It was gathered from a taxi owner, Alhaji Ismail Tajudeen, whose car was successfully converted from petrol to CNG that it took about four hours or a little more for the conversion of his car.
Tajudeen noted that he decided to convert his taxi from petrol to CNG powered because he could no longer afford the current cost of petrol which is between N1,100 to N1,200 per litre in most of the independent marketer’s filling station in metropolitan Lagos.
He said: ” I decided to change my taxi to CNG because the cost of petrol is too high these days. Commercial drivers are just working like slaves to petrol marketers. I learnt that the cost of CNG is cheaper and I decided to give it a trial.”
