Lagos govt set to curb GHG emission with green gas registry initiative

By FEMI AKINOLA

Lagos State Government has planned to establish Green Gas Registry to curb high rate of Greenhouse Gas (GHGs) emission and pollution in the state.
Currently, according to the State Environment Police (LASEPA), the state emits over 24 million tonnes of GHGs. This alarming rate of emission of GHGs and the devastating effects of the air quality in the state has serious implication on the public health and economic downturn.
Consequently, the state has planned to achieve about 60 million tonnes reduction in GHGs emission by 2050 through the establishment of Green Gas Registry.
Speaking during a stakeholder’s engagement session on the implementation of GHGs Registry for the state in Ikeja, the General Manager, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, highlighted the alarming rate of emission GHGs in the state and its effects on the state’s air quality.
Represented by the agency’s Director, Environmental Sustainability (E-Waste and Plastic Solution), Dayo Adebayo, the LASEPA boss stressed that with the on-going rate of GHGs emission in the state, the state might emit 74 million tonnes of greenhouse gas by 2050, if not curtailed.
In his remarks at the event, the Managing Director of TPHG Technologies Limited, the consultant handling the GHGs reduction project, Dr. Mofoluso Fagbeja, said the state could achieve more than 19% reduction in carbon emission in Lagos, if all hands are on deck.
Fagbeja called for collaboration among stakeholders of the implementation of the environmental mangement plans set out in the greenhouse gas emissions scheme that the state government is working on.
The consultant noted that the process will help the state to set different caps for carbon emissions across different sectors and also give people opportunities to invest in green technology to bring down greenhouse gas emissions.
