Lagos govt takes down shrine for environmental breach

The Lagos State government has taken decisive action against a shrine under construction at Ile Epo, Iyana Ipaja, due to violations of environmental regulations.

This development was confirmed by Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, who announced the demolition on Thursday via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account.

The shrine, which was being built close to Moshalasi Bus Stop, breached the state’s environmental guidelines by being near a major road.

Despite receiving several stop-work orders, the shrine’s owners allegedly continued construction and even engaged in physical altercations with personnel from the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK).

Wahab highlighted that the shrine was ultimately demolished after repeated warnings went unheeded.

He further emphasized that the Lagos State government is committed to maintaining environmental order and warned against any further infractions, stating that any environmental nuisances within state parks and gardens would face strict penalties.
