President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will today commission the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) – Portland Natural Gas (CNG) conversion, filling, reverse engineering and training centre in Utako, Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The commissioning of the NASENI-Portland CNG conversion centre is to reiterate the Tinubu’s administration policy on/and commitment to moving from the usage of petrol vehicles to CNG vehicles across the country.
The CNG conversion to be inaugurated by Tinubu, according to an e-signed statement by the Director, Information, NASENI, Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, is equipped with the latest technology and staffed by trained professionals to ensure efficient and safe conversions.
According to the statement, ”It will offer comprehensive training programmes for technicians, engineers, and other stakeholders, fostering domestication of expertise in CNG systems and promoting the adoption of green energy solutions across the nation.”
According to the Vice-Chairman/CEO NASENI, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, the establishment of the NASENI-Portland Gas Reverse Engineering Centre marks a transformative moment for Nigeria’s energy sector.
He stressed that the CNG centre underscores NASENI’s unwavering commitments sustainable innovations and the development of home grown technological and manufacturing capabilities.
”At NASENI, we are committed to reducing out carbon footprint and provide affordable, eco-friendly fuel alternatives to Nigerians. The innovation is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, contributing to the cleaner air and healthier environment.
”Additionally, the adoption of CNG will offer economic benefits by reducing the cost for consumers and creating new jobs opportunities in the Nigerian’s green energy sector,” Halilu noted.

As President Tinubu gears up for the commissioning of NASENI-Portland CNG conversion centre in Utako later today (Friday), NASENI will showcase a skillfully assembled CNG cars by NASENI’s team of engineers and technicians.
CNG is seen as a suitable and cheaper alternative fuel for motorists with lower emission impact and a more environmentally friendly fuel.
Experts believe that once the CNG is made available, and cost of conversion, which was in hundreds of thousands of naira reduced, many Nigerians will seamlessly embrace the initiative by the current government.
However, investigation into how prepared are Nigerian car owners ready to embrace the CNG policy shows that the cost of conversion of petrol vehicles to CNG which was seen to be on the high side for majority of car owners may likely not encourage quick positive response of car owners in the country in conversion of petrol cars to CNG as expected by the government.
Experts have pointed at three critical points that need to be taken care of by the government if the policy must succeed and Nigerians move from petrol vehicles to CNG.
The three key areas pointed at are necessary gas pipelines across the country, sufficient CNG conversion centres and filling stations where CNG will be dispensed without stress.
