Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, on Friday, announced the suspension of all mining operations within the state pending data verifications of all the miners across the state.
This he disclosed during the inauguration ceremony of the initial 60 Mining Marshalls tasked with combating illegal mining activities aims to address concerns regarding unregulated mining practices.
Deputizing for the governor, Sam Ode emphasized the necessity of this suspension until comprehensive data on miners is compiled by the Mineral Resources and Environment Management Committee.
Alia underscored the importance of verifying and collating information on all miners operating in the state, stressing that no mining activities would proceed until this verification process is completed.
The governor, firm in his stance against illegality, reiterated his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of the citizens.
He urged the security apparatus, including the joint Taskforce on illegal mining and MIREMCO, to ensure strict enforcement of regulations to enhance public welfare and boost Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Additionally, Alia directed the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to intensify efforts in combating crimes related to the exploitation of the state’s rich mineral resources.
He called upon them to contribute meaningfully to the overall development of Benue State and Nigeria as a whole.
In his address, Governor Alia acknowledged the challenges facing the state, emphasizing the need for resourceful and visionary leadership to leverage available talents and manage limited resources effectively.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the transformation of Benue State, leveraging its abundant natural resources while ensuring sustainable development and improved livelihoods for its people.
