MTN Partners NiMet To Sensitise Farmers On Weather Conditions In Nigeria

By Grace Samuel

MTN, a leading telecommunications services provider in Nigeria, has announced a partnership with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to sensitise farmers on weather and climate information in the country.

This partnership, it was gathered, follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently signed by NiMet and Tomorrow.io, a Boston-based weather intelligence company with presence across Africa and the Middle East.

Tomorrow.io began as a software company that offered hyper-precise, street-level weather forecasting but has set its sights on space.

The company recently announced the launched Tomorrow-R1, what it claims is the world’s first commercially built weather-radar satellite, via SpaceX’s Falcon 9

MTN and NiMET, it was gathered, are collaborating on various fronts, including commercializing weather data, improving the accuracy of weather and climate forecasts, and utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) in weather and climate intelligence.

Already, the Chief Corporate Services & Sustainability Officer of MTN Nigeria Communications Limited, Tobechukwu Okigbo has expressed his support for the partnership between MTN and NiMet.

He stated that as the leading provider of communication services in Nigeria MTN is committed to supporting national initiatives that enhance the quality of life of Nigerians.

He further added that they are open to supporting NiMet’s partnership with a view to making their services available to farmers across Nigeria.
