As Nigeria Shifts Focus To Environmentally Friendly Transportation Mix

By Yemi Olakitan

In Nigeria, there is a growing focus on environmentally friendly transportation and the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan for example aims to achieve 10% biofuel blends by 2030 and complete EV adoption by 2060.

The removal of fuel subsidies is expected to boost the electric mobility sector, encouraging both government and private initiatives to promote EVs and invest in charging infrastructure.

In June 2021, the Vice President of Nigeria Yemi Osinbajo unveiled the first made-in-Nigeria EV, the Hyundai Kona by Stallion Motors. This milestone demonstrates the country’s commitment to advancing electric mobility.

Furthermore, Nigeria’s National Automotive Design and Development Company inaugurated the country’s first EV charging station at Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto State. The potential for bidirectional charging strategies can support renewable energy development.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) is another entity that is in the vanguard of ensuring Sustainability in the transportation sector in Lagos, the state aims for complete decarbonization by 2050.

LAMATA is working on electricity-powered bus service outlets, and charging centres Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu unveiled the first set of electric buses for the state’s mass transit scheme, with plans to expand the EV fleet and transform Lagos into a smart city.

The Nigerian renewable energy firm Oanda Clean Energy (OCEL) also partnered with LAMATA to create a sustainable and integrated public transportation system, reducing greenhouse gas emissions while promoting economic growth. Possible EVS, an innovative mobility company in Nigeria, has also launched electric taxis, contributing to sustainable transport.

Egoras a forward-thinking clean energy enterprise, is poised to make a significant impact in sustainable transportation in Nigeria.

On April 28 the company will unveil its highly anticipated electric vehicle (EV) a homegrown solution produced at their facility in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The APEX 28 Electric Vehicle embodies innovation and sustainability. It integrates cutting-edge features, including blockchain technology, sensors, and cameras.

With a refined and opulent design, the APEX 28 appeals to discerning drivers who prioritize both elegance and environmental consciousness. This stride toward clean energy within the transportation industry reflects Egoras’ commitment to reshaping the future of transportation in Africa.

Nigeria, too, is making strides in its quest to transition into a full-fledged energy-optimized nation. The recent pact with foreign firms to build a mega solar PV manufacturing plant signifies a move from traditional electricity and petrol-enhanced vehicles to cleaner alternatives like electric vehicles. Exciting times lie ahead as Egoras leads the charge toward a greener, more sustainable future.

The Egoras Dual-Fuel Tricycle, also introduced by Egoras Technology, is a gas-powered vehicle designed to run on both petrol and liquid-purified gas. This tricycle offers a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution for urban and rural areas, addressing challenges post-subsidy removal. Constructed with high-quality materials like aluminium, steel, and carbon fibre, it ensures durability and reliability across various terrains. With a 10-horsepower engine and a top speed of 60kmph, it provides users with a powerful and efficient mode of transportation.

The tricycle’s user-friendly design facilitates easy maintenance for operators, emphasizing safety through rigorous testing to meet industry standards. Egoras Technology aims to drive positive change in Nigeria’s transportation sector by offering this sustainable and versatile transport option.

The firm aims to pioneer sustainable driving with electric vehicles. The company, which already launched the gas-power tricycle a few months ago, is taking a new step with its technology. It highlighted the distinctive qualities of its EVs, with standout features including integration of blockchain technology, sensors, and cameras.

Its eagerly awaited electric vehicle signals a notable advancement in sustainable transportation endeavours. In a statement, the company affirmed its dedication to facilitating the transition of African communities from reliance on fossil fuels to embracing sustainable energy, exemplified by the APEX 28 EV

According to The Independent, the chief executive officer of Egoras Technology, Ugoji Harry, stated: “The APEX 28 Electric Vehicle embodies our commitment to innovation and sustainability. “We believe this homegrown solution will play a crucial role in reshaping the future of transportation in Africa.”

He outlined the unique attributes of the APEX 28, highlighting its incorporation of blockchain technology, sensors, and cameras as standout features.

According to his description, the electric vehicle presents a refined and opulent design that appeals to discerning drivers who prioritise elegance and environmental consciousness. Recently, Nigeria has taken a huge step in its quest to transition into a full-fledged energy-optimised nation.

The plan has seen the country enter a pact with foreign firms to build a mega solar PV manufacturing plant in Nigeria as it transitions from electricity to solar power and petrol-enhanced vehicles to electric vehicles.

This closely follows Enviable Transport’s expansion of its fleet with the acquisition of over one hundred hybrid electric vehicles (EVs). The development comes as the company announced its collaboration with CIG Motors, the proprietors of GAC Motors.

CIG Motors is internationally acclaimed for its high-quality electric vehicle (EV) assets, particularly its hybrid vehicles.

Electric vehicles in Nigeria can address various issues, including noise pollution reduction, lower maintenance costs, and a shift towards cleaner energy sources like renewable energy.

However, challenges such as inadequate power supply, limited charging infrastructure, and the need for specialized training for EV technicians hinder their widespread adoption.

To overcome these obstacles, Nigeria needs to focus on developing charging infrastructure, training certified EV technicians, and implementing supportive policies and regulations. Despite the hurdles, Nigeria is making strides towards electric mobility with initiatives like the Electric Vehicle Development Plan and partnerships to manufacture EVs locally.

By investing in research, local manufacturing, and recycling technology, Nigeria aims to boost e-mobility and reduce emissions. The transition to electric vehicles presents an opportunity for Nigeria to embrace sustainable transportation solutions and reduce its carbon footprint.

It is evident that while challenges remain, including infrastructure development, Nigeria’s efforts toward EV adoption and environmentally conscious transportation are commendable.

The shift toward cleaner mobility aligns with global sustainability goals and can significantly impact air quality and emissions reduction.
