Environment Ministry issues heatwave advisory for pregnant women, infants

Responding to recent warnings from the Nigeria Meteorological Agency regarding extended heatwaves nationwide, the Federal Ministry of Environment has issued vital information and advisories aimed at mitigating the effects of the soaring temperatures.

According to a general advisory issued by the Ministry of Environment and made available to NatureNews on Thursday, by Mr. Ibrahim Haruna, Head of the Press and Public Relations Unit, the Ministry emphasized the intensified frequency and severity of heatwaves due to climate change.

With temperatures reaching peaks of 39°C in the south and 41°C in the north, urgent proactive measures are stressed to address heat-related stress.

The Ministry highlighted the significant health risks posed by exposure to these heatwaves, particularly for vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly.

Symptoms of heat stress include dry lips, excessive thirst, weakness, nausea, confusion, and fainting.

To combat the ongoing heatwave and ensure public safety, the Ministry outlined a set of guidelines which include Plan Outdoor Activities Thoughtfully Individuals are urged to plan outdoor activities with consideration for peak heat hours.

Additionally, maintaining an emergency kit stocked with essentials like oral rehydration salts, water bottles, and a handheld fan is advised.

Maintaining a Cool Indoor Environment Employing tactics such as closing curtains during peak heat periods and utilizing fans or air conditioning units can aid in maintaining a cool indoor environment.

Staying Hydrated and Seek Shade Individuals are encouraged to drink water regularly, wear lightweight clothing, and seek out shaded areas.

Minimizing physical activity and abstaining from caffeine, alcohol, and sugary beverages are also emphasized.

Ensure Safety for Vulnerable Groups Special emphasis is placed on the well-being of infants, children, and pregnant women, with specific guidelines provided to ensure their safety during the heatwave.

As temperatures continue to rise, the Federal Ministry of Environment emphasizes the critical importance of adhering to these guidelines to safeguard public health and mitigate the impact of the ongoing heatwave across the nation.
