Erosion: Reps task FG on construction of shoreline protection in Delta
The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government, through the Ecological Project Office to expedite the construction of shoreline protection for some communities in Delta.
This, according to the house, is to prevent further erosion-related damage and ensure survival of the communities.
The resolution followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance by Rep. Nnamdi Ezechi (PDP-Delta) during plenary in Abuja on Wednesday.
Moving the motion, the lawmaker said that continuous erosion led to the destruction of the indigenous communities, resulting in loss of lives and livelihoods of the residents.
He expressed concerns over the ongoing erosion eating away at the shores, which he said required immediate action to prevent further devastation.
The lawmaker said he was worried about the imminent extinction faced by the communities, if swift and decisive action is not taken to address the erosion crisis.
Adopting the motion, the house directed the Federal Ministries of Environment and Niger Delta Affairs to collaborate in addressing the erosion crisis by dredging the River Niger.
The house stated that the ministries should also see to the sand filling of gullies in the Ndokwa East communities to mitigate environmental damage and ensure sustainable development in the region.
The house further mandated its Committees on Environment, Niger Delta Ministry and Ecological Fund to ensure compliance.
