Imo Assembly Passes Motion for Mandatory Market Cleaning

By Faridat Salifu

In a bid to address the escalating issue of unhygienic conditions at the markets in Imo State, the Imo House of Assembly has moved to enforce a mandatory weekly clean-up exercise.

The motion, spearheaded by Dr. Francis Osuoha of the APC, representing Ohaji Egbema, was brought to light on January 23rd, urging Governor Hope Uzodimma to mandate the state Ministry of Environment to issue the directive.

The motion stressed the pressing need for regular market cleaning in light of the prevalent filth and hazardous debris found in majority of the state’s markets.

Dr. Osuoha underlined the critical importance of maintaining clean and safe market environments to safeguard the well-being of the people and mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks.

The motion was met with resounding support from various members of the assembly.

Mr. Clinton Amadi, the Deputy Minority Leader representing Owerri Municipal, emphasized the necessity of clean markets to reduce the incidence of diseases stemming from unhygienic conditions.

Additionally, Mr. Johnson Duru, along with Mr. Innocent Ikpamezie, highlighted the adverse impact of unclean markets on the welfare of citizens, citing the need for immediate action to rectify the situation.

Following extensive deliberations, the Speaker, Mr. Chike Olemgbe, ruled in favor of the motion, signifying a significant leap towards prioritizing public health and ensuring a clean and healthy environment for the residents of Imo State.

The directive is a critical step towards addressing the longstanding sanitation concerns in the markets, demonstrating a clear commitment to safeguarding public health and well-being.
