Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that facilitates the absorbtion of calcium and maintain strong bones in the body.
It plays a role in immune function, cell growth, and reducing inflammation. Sunlight being a primary source of vitamin D, it can be sourced through our diet.
Vitamin D is also referred to as “the sunshine vitamin” because the sun is one of the best sources of this nutrient.
Some of the amazing sources of Vitamin D also includes Fatty fish, Cod liver oil, eggs etc.
Fatty Fish which includes salmon, mackerel, and trout are not only high in vitamin D but also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit heart health and brain function. Cod Liver Oil contains a significant amount of vitamin D, along with omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A.
Dairy Products such as Milk, cheese, and yogurt are often fortified with vitamin D. These products also provide calcium, protein, and other essential nutrients for bone health. The yolks from eggs contain small amounts of vitamin D. Eggs also provide high-quality protein and various vitamins and minerals.
Mushrooms such as shiitake and maitake, can produce vitamin D when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. They also offer fiber, antioxidants, and other beneficial compounds. Cereals and fruit juices are fortified with vitamin D. Check the labels to find products with added vitamin D.
These foods when consumed can help support vitamin D levels in the body, promoting healthy bones, immune function, and overall well-being.
The body may not be able to get sufficient vitamin D it requires through diet alone, especially for those who have limited sun exposure. Thus, supplements may be recommended for individuals with low vitamin D levels.
