MTN to deploy energy solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions

MTN Nigeria has announced on Friday, its plans to deploy clean and efficient energy solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
In its 2023 climate change report, the ICT giant disclosed its collaboration with a renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP) project to implement a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) power plan to feed both its corporate office, MTN Plaza, and primary data centre in Ikoyi.
The underground cable connecting the power plant to the facilities, ensures dependability in the event that grid power is absent.
Government agencies and international corporations have worked hard to limit greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming.
In order to lead Nigeria towards sustainable development, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve Nigeria’s resilience to climate change impacts, a framework known as the National Climate Change Policy and Response Strategy was created in 2012.
More recently, in 2021, then-President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Climate Change bill into law in order to give Nigeria a legislative framework through which the nation may achieve its climate goals as well as long-term social and economic sustainability and resilience.
MTN stated in its climate change report that it had decreased its overall energy expenses by more over N570 million thanks to its ambitious green energy project.
According to the report, this was accomplished by deploying three 1.1 megawatt (MW) gas generators to considerably reduced greenhouse gas emissions, which then decreased energy costs.
Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, said of the company’s initiatives in clean energy: “Our commitment to Nigeria goes beyond connectivity. We are committed to becoming a part of the solution since we are aware of the environmental difficulties that our country is facing.
“Our investments in sustainable infrastructure and energy are not just beneficial to our businesses; they are also crucial to Nigeria’s future.”
MTN The MTN Group’s Project Zero, which focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions across its footprints and boosting operational efficiency, includes Nigeria’s net zero emissions target.
The corporation wants to achieve this by cutting back on energy use, switching to green energy sources, and investing in climate protection initiatives that have been approved and meet strict environmental and social requirements to offset emissions that cannot be avoided.
