Niger Assembly Calls for Reactivation of Bosso Dam to Alleviate Water Scarcity

By Dauda Abbas

In a significant move, the Niger State House of Assembly has called upon the State Government to take urgent measures to revive the Bosso Dam to tackle the pressing issue of water scarcity affecting certain parts of the state.

This call came as a result of a motion presented by Mr. Abubakar Gomna (APC-Bosso) and seconded by Mr. Abdulmalik Bala (SDP-Katcha) during the plenary session on Tuesday.

Mr. Gomna emphasized that the Bosso Dam was originally constructed to conserve, treat, and provide drinking water and other domestic uses for the residents of Bosso and its surrounding areas.

Regrettably, the dam has been non-functional for an extended period, leading to persistent water shortages in the region.

He further highlighted that due to the dam’s inactivity, residents have been forced to rely on water vendors whose water sources are unclear.

Recognizing the critical role of water in sustaining life, Mr. Gomna expressed concerns that the ongoing water scarcity posed a significant risk of waterborne diseases to the residents.

Consequently, Mr. Gomna called upon the government to initiate the rehabilitation of the dam and upgrade the necessary equipment, particularly pumps, to enhance its capacity for water supply to the affected areas.

He emphasized that reactivating the dam would not only benefit Bosso but also extend to the Maikunkele Community.

In response to the motion, Mr. Idris Vatsa (APC-Lapai) proposed that the matter be referred to the Committees on Water Resources and Urban Renewal.

His proposal received support from Yusuf Dabban (PDP-Lavun), and the House unanimously agreed to refer the motion to the appropriate committees for further deliberation and reporting within six weeks.
