Kwara Govt Urges Public Vigilance as Climate Change Increases Flooding Risks

The Kwara State Government has issued a public alert concerning the heightened risk of flooding due to changing rainfall patterns.

This warning follows earlier alerts from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (Nimet) regarding the potential for devastating floods in certain regions of the country.

The statement conveying this caution was released on Friday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Samuel Elizabeth.

The government has identified the Kosubosu community and other riverine areas, particularly in the Kwara North Senatorial District, North Central Nigeria, as particularly susceptible to these impending climatic changes.

Mrs. Elizabeth emphasized that the alterations in climate conditions are driven by natural phenomena, underscoring the necessity for preparedness to ensure the safety and well-being of Kwara residents.

In response to these challenges, the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has taken proactive measures since its inception.

These include dredging of the Asa River, construction of embankments, maintenance of drainage systems, provision of additional waste disposal facilities, and the expansion of dumpsites to facilitate proper waste management.

Furthermore, the government has promoted waste recycling, established irrigation systems to benefit farmers, conducted regular advocacy and sensitization campaigns on environmental issues through various media channels, and enforced relevant regulations.

Mrs. Elizabeth called upon all individuals residing in riverine areas and other flood-prone regions to relocate to safer and habitable environments to safeguard their lives and properties.

To prevent potential losses and damage, the Permanent Secretary urged Kwara citizens to obtain necessary approvals before commencing construction projects, refrain from building structures near water bodies, heed flood warnings, avoid discarding waste along water courses, and maintain clean and unobstructed drainage systems. She also discouraged open burning of refuse.

Emphasizing the importance of tree planting, Mrs. Elizabeth encouraged residents to promptly report environmental concerns to the Ministry. The government is committed to promoting sustainable living and offering relief to the people of Kwara within the context of environmental conservation.

The Permanent Secretary reminded the public that improving the quality of the environment is a collective responsibility, essential for creating a better living environment for all residents of the state.
