Flood Devastates Ondo Communities, Residents Seek Government Assistance

By Salifu Faridat

The Igbobini and Ilu Agbo communities in Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State are reeling from the severe impact of continuous heavy rainfall over three days, resulting in devastating flooding.

This natural disaster has left many residents homeless, prompting them to seek urgent assistance from the state government.

In response to the dire situation, a significant number of affected residents have sought refuge at RCM Primary School in Ilu Agbo, as their houses have been ravaged by the floodwaters.

The situation has reached a critical point, and the affected residents are appealing for immediate support from both the state and federal governments.

To assess the extent of the damage and understand the urgent needs of the affected communities, Mrs. Sipasi Aluko, the Chairman of Ese-Odo Local Government Area, visited the two communities at the weekend.

During her visit, she appealed to relevant authorities and well-meaning individuals to extend their support and help alleviate the suffering of the affected residents. The local government has also assured the communities that they will intervene promptly to address their plight.

In addition to the communities of Igbobini and Ilu Agbo, the bridge connecting Ese-Odo-Irele to Araromi, Ayeka, and Okitipupa communities in Okitipupa Local Government has been submerged due to the flooding. This has led to many travelers being stranded, with some resorting to using canoes to cross over.

The concrete cemented embankment, constructed during Dr. Olusegun Agagu’s administration, remains the sole land route connecting Ese-Odo and Irele with Okitipupa Local Governments.

Chief Olafusi Olaluwoye, a resident and community leader, has appealed to the state government to revisit the embankment contract and extend the construction of the Araromi Ayeka Bridge to the terminal end at Ode Irele.

Such an intervention would significantly improve the mobility of the people living in the area and provide much-needed relief to their challenging circumstances.

As the flood situation continues to affect the communities and disrupt livelihoods, swift and effective action from the government is crucial in providing support and assistance to the affected residents.

Collaborative efforts from both government authorities and compassionate individuals are needed to alleviate the suffering and help these communities recover from the devastating impact of the floods.

The people of Igbobini and Ilu Agbo are facing an urgent humanitarian crisis due to the flooding, and they require immediate aid and assistance.

The state government must act promptly to provide relief, while also considering long-term measures to prevent future disasters and improve infrastructure in flood-prone areas. With a unified effort, these communities can begin to rebuild and regain their livelihoods.
