In response to the escalating frequency and severity of flooding incidents, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is calling for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to mitigate the impact of flooding.
Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, made the appeal during the agency’s recent advocacy campaign against flooding across local councils in the state.
The campaign, which commenced in the Lagos West Senatorial District and aims to sensitize residents in flood-prone areas in the Lagos East Senatorial District, seeks to build resilience and preparedness.
Speaking at Eti-Osa Local Council under the theme “Flood Free Lagos 2023, Building Resilience is Our Collective Responsibility,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu emphasized the significance of residents adhering to environmental rules and regulations.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and properties in the face of increasing flood risks.
Drawing attention to Eti-Osa’s vulnerability to ocean surge and flooding, the Permanent Secretary stressed the importance of keeping the drainage systems free of refuse to prevent casualties during heavy rainfall.

While acknowledging the state’s improved flood resilience since past flooding incidents in 2007 and 2011, he urged the community to play its part by staying indoors during heavy rainfalls and ensuring water channels remain clear.
Mr. Sharafa Balogun, the Environment Supervisor in the council, also acknowledged Eti-Osa’s susceptibility to flooding due to its location in the middle of the Lagoon.
He revealed that the council has been actively sensitizing residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
During the forum, members of the Community Development Associations (CDAs) expressed concerns about the insufficient drainage system in Eti-Osa, attributing it to population growth.
They urged the government to prioritize expanding the drainage infrastructure and take urgent action against the activities of sand dredgers in the council.
The campaign aims to foster greater awareness and cooperation among residents and authorities to effectively combat the menace of flooding in Lagos State.
By working together, the community can build resilience and better prepare for future flood events, protecting lives, and properties.
