Electricity Commission shares energy tips to help consumers reduce bills
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has shared valuable strategies for Nigerians to cut down on their electricity bills.
Through its official Twitter handle, the commission offered tips that are applicable to both metered and non-metered customers, aiming to help consumers reduce their electricity consumption costs.
One of the key suggestions provided by NERC is to install energy-efficient CFL (compact fluorescent lamps) or LED (light-emitting diodes) bulbs. These types of bulbs not only save energy but also result in cost savings for users.
Additionally, using CFLs and LEDs can lead to fewer bulb changes and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to efforts in combating climate change.
Furthermore, the commission noted that LEDs are especially suitable for various applications, such as streetlights, walkway lighting, outdoor lighting, and industrial use.
NERC emphasized the importance of turning off empty fridges or freezers.
Beyond completely empty fridges or freezers, consumers should also consider the contents of these appliances at any given time. If the items inside are not perishable, there is no need to keep the fridge or freezer running for extended periods, which can lead to unnecessary energy consumption and higher bills.
Another practical tip suggested by NERC is to replace old appliances with energy-efficient ones. The market now offers a wide range of energy-saving products, including air conditioners, fridges/freezers, pressing irons, fans, and kitchen appliances.
Opting for energy-saving appliances when upgrading can significantly reduce electricity consumption and costs for both residential and commercial consumers.
NERC also highlighted the financial advantages of cooking with gas instead of electricity. Consistent hours of cooking with electricity can result in substantially higher electricity bills for households and businesses.
As a more cost-effective alternative, using gas for cooking can help alleviate the economic burdens many Nigerians currently face.
NERC’s energy-saving tips serve as valuable guidelines for consumers to reduce their electricity bills while contributing to energy conservation and sustainability.
By adopting these strategies, Nigerians can play an active role in managing their electricity consumption and expenses, ultimately leading to a more efficient and environmentally conscious society.
