The President of the Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) has announced the appointment of Alhaji Suleiman Adama as the Acting General Secretary.

WAPAN serves as the umbrella body for waste pickers in Nigeria.

In a press statement released yesterday, the President of WAPAN expressed confidence that Adama’s appointment would have the desired impact on the association.

The statement reads as follows: “Adama’s background in maritime management and excellent business development skills will contribute to the Association’s presence and visibility in Nigeria. We believe his meritorious public service background and strong communication experience will also help WAPAN develop strategic alliances with key stakeholders.”

According to the statement, Adama possesses extensive professional experience in the Nigerian and global maritime industry.

“During his service years at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), the apex Federal Government maritime regulatory agency in Nigeria, he held various positions.

These include Head of Wet/Dry cargo units, Planning and Research Unit, Shipping Policy Development, Ship Intelligence and Consultancy Services. Additionally, he served as the Port Services Controller at the leading eastern port in Nigeria, the Port Harcourt Port, overseeing shipping activities in Port Harcourt, Bonny Island, Okrika, Brass, and numerous jetties.”

Adama’s contributions to policy development in the areas of Inter-Agency Cooperation, Removal of Wrecks and Derelicts, the Cabotage Bill, and the Compendium of NIMASA seminar papers, among others, have earned him the NIMASA Director General’s Letter of Commendation.

Furthermore, he has received the Minister of Finance’s Letter of Appreciation for his entrepreneurship and mentoring of Nigerian youths.
