Research council invents cholesterol drugs from Mushrooms
A cardiovascular medication called Lovastatin, which is utilized for lowering cholesterol in the body, has been created from oyster mushrooms by the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC).
The patents for this advancement were produced by the RMRDC’s researchers and were subsequently developed at the Prof Hussaini Ibrahim Technology and Innovation Centre. During a tour of the facility in Abuja, Engr. Florence Madueguna, the project officer at the centre, revealed this information to the media.
According to her, the creation of the Lovastatin drug from oyster mushrooms and red-yield rice played a crucial role in the Raw Materials Research and Development Council’s first-place triumph at the 7th Science, Technology, and Innovation Expo. The victory came with a substantial cash prize.
The patent for this innovation was produced by the council’s scientists and subsequently developed in their laboratory. She also stated that they are collaborating with the private sector to ensure mass production of the drug.
Chukwuma Ngaha, the Deputy Director of the Public Affairs and Corporate Services Department, stated that the centre contains approximately 21 distinct plants that manufacture various raw materials sourced locally. Most of the machines used in the production process were designed and created by scientists working within the agency.
Ngaha added that the soap noodles making, shea butter, and caustic soda machines are among the agency’s greatest accomplishments, and they have already begun to support local entrepreneurs in the country.
