The Federal Government has concluded plans to site a grain hub in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mohammed Abubakar, disclosed this recently after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari at the State House in Abuja.
Abubakar revealed that Port Harcourt had been chosen as the hub for the 25,000 metric tonnes of wheat expected from Ukraine, as Russia also did extend its supply to the country through a United Nations arrangement.
He said, the wheat consignment from Ukraine is still being expected as it is hoped the hub would create economic activities in the area.

As part of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, Ukraine exported 6.9 million tonnes of wheat, 20 percent of which was sent to African countries. Out of this, Nigeria will get about 1.8 per cent.
Some 2.67 million tonnes of wheat, or 43 per cent, was transported to the poorest countries and those with incomes below the average.
The grain initiative will allow Ukraine to remain a top agrarian nation and will allow Ukrainian farmers affected by the Russian war, which started more than a year ago, to sow and be able to receive income from their harvest.
The grain initiative was launched on July 22, 2022, with the first bulker carrying Ukrainian food commodities leaving the port of Odessa on August 1.
Similarly, state wise comparison of wheat production for 2021 shows that Kano state is the major producer of wheat with production of 6,512.8 tonnes, followed by Jigawa state (5,854.8 tonnes), Kebbi state (4,422 tonnes) while Zamfara state ranked last (672 tonnes).
