Wonders of African nutmeg (Ehuru)

Ehuru seeds are gotten from Ehuru plants which are known by different names such as ehiri, ariwo, Jamaican nutmeg, African nutmeg (Monodora Myristica), airama, to mention a few. It is also called Calabash nutmeg. Its seed is mainly used for culinary purposes (as a substitute for the nutmeg) but less commonly, its plant is used as an ornamental plant in some countries.

Ehuru, is a very powerful plant. It is used in preparing soups, stews, cakes and desserts of all kinds. Ehuru enhances the quality of sleep. It contains compounds that suppress the stress hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) which are produced by the body during the day. These foods contain high amount of magnesium, manganese, potassium, and melatonin. These nutrients help the glands to produce the hormones such as serotonin and melatonin, which aids in relaxation and induces sleep. It fights insomnia and improve the overall health.

Ehuru seed contains no cholesterol which makes it an excellent food choice for promoting heart health. It provides the body with fibre and magnesium, important nutrients that are good for heart health.

Nutrients like Magnesium, Zinc, Iron, and Copper are very essential to the body as well as improve the health of the brain. Copper helps to control the nerve signals which originates from the brain. A decrease in the level of copper may lead to neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimers.
