Millet wonders!

Millets are varieties of small seeded grains cultivated globally, grown for its grains and basically used as food for animals and humans. Sorghum and pearl millets are the most popular and widely cultivated. They are annual cereals that belong to the grass family Poaceae. It is a drought resistant crop and low in maintenance. It has a lot of benefits and is used for various culinary purposes.

There are about 20 types of millet cultivated. It matures within a short period of time in comparison to rice and wheat. Millet is a great source of fibre which is great for the gut health. It helps to reduce constipation and aids in preventing colon cancer. It serves as a prebiotics which promotes healthy bacteria in the digestive tract.

Millet is gluten free and abundant in proteins and fibre which is great for people suffering from celiac diseases, a disorder in which the small intestine reacts to sensitivity from gluten. Millet helps to boost the immune system.

Millet is rich in magnesium, niacin (Vitamin B3), Phosphorus, Manganese, Copper, Carbohydrates. Magnesium ensures the proper heart functions. Niacin reduces the level of bad cholesterol and giving relief from Oxidative stress. It protects the heart from various diseases. It is rich in anti-oxidants which prevents or lowers oxidative stress that may lead to life threatening damages like Arthritis, Dementia, Alzheimer’s etc.

Millet facilitates wound healing and helps fight the growth of cancer cells in the body. It is well known and utilized for its anti microbial, antifungal qualities. It can be used to substitute rice and it’s healthy for diabetic patients and for weight management. This is due to its low glycemic index.

The amino acids lysine contained in millet helps to strengthen and build the muscle. Tryptophan helps to relieve stress and enhances sound sleep.

Millet is great for women health of all ages. It helps to relieve menstrual pains, this results from its magnesium contents. Both pregnant and lactating mothers are encouraged to consume this great food because it improves milk production. It also soothes the skin, nourishes and increases its elasticity.
