Reduce meat consumption to save environment — Medical expert

The Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Kwara Chapter, has advised Nigerian to reduce the consumption of meat to reduce carbon foot prints.

Reducing carbon foot prints entails reducing the amount of energy we use, eat fewer animal products, travel smart, shop locally and reducing waste.

Reducing carbon foot prints are some of the ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that damage the atmosphere and cause climate change.

A statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Friday quotes Dr Bilqis Alatishe-Muhammad as giving the advice on the sidelines of a programme to commemorate the World Health Day.

She stated that the 2022 World Health Day themed: “Our Planet, Our Health”, was a day to focus on global health issues and ways to improve health for all.

“This year, the World Health Organisation is focusing on our planet, and how our environment affects our health.

“There are many ways we can protect our health and the environment. One of the most important is to reduce our meat consumption.

“Meat production is one of the biggest sources of greenhouse gas emissions, and it also requires a lot of resources, like water and land.

“Reducing our meat consumption can help reduce our carbon footprint and save resources”.

The Kwara-MWAN President observed that another important way to protect our health and the environment is to recycle and compost.

According to her, recycling helps reduce the amount of waste we produce, and composting helps turn organic waste into nutrient-rich soil.

She pointed out that we can also help protect our planet and our health by planting trees, adding that trees help clean the air, reduce erosion, and provide habitat for animals.

“Planting trees is a simple and easy way to make a difference for our planet and our health,” the Kwara-MWAN president said.

Alatishe-Muhammad urged people to reflect on the impact that our everyday choices have on our planet.

She also appealed to Nigerians to pledge and make more mindful decisions that will not only benefit our health, but also the health of our planet.
