Nigeria @ 61: New device for regular power supply introduced in Nigeria
By Nneka Nwogwugwu
Schneider Electric, an energy management and automation company, said it had introduced a new device to ensure regular power supply in the country.
Mr Morris Nmor, Enterprise Manager of the company, said the device was a three-phase UPS that worked with existing electrical systems to provide power conditioning, back-up protection, and distribution for electronic equipment.
Nmor disclosed this in a statement released in Lagos on Friday.
He informed that the device would address the twin problem of power surge and interrupted power supply still common in some parts of the country.
Nmor said the UPS, Galaxy™ VL 200-500 kW (400V/480V), which was mostly for industrial use, offered up to 99 per cent efficiency in patented ECOnversion™ mode.
The enterprise manager said the Galaxy VL was built to reduce voltage stress in homes and industrial applications and would also be unveiled across the globe.
“The Galaxy VL was built to reduce voltage stress on the PN junction which is what causes system failure for most UPS.
‘’Typically, this equipment (UPS) is resilient to a fault. It doesn’t break down easily.
“You can maximise availability, reliability and uptime for power continuity through the Galaxy VL UPS in your data center,’’ he said.
He said with Galaxy VL, Schneider Electric introduced ‘Live Swap’, a pioneering feature, which delivered a touch-safe design throughout the process of adding or replacing the power modules while the UPS was online and fully operational.
The manager said additionally, the Live Swap’s touch-safe design offered increased protection for employees who no longer had to transfer the UPS to maintenance bypass or battery operation during the insertion or removal of the power modules.
“The average market footprint is 1.6m2 while Galaxy VL footprint is 0.8m2 therefore maximising space for all data centres.
“The Galaxy VL was designed with large data centres and collocation providers in mind.
“The Galaxy VL can work with the Lithium Ion batteries further reducing footprint and total load on the data center facility,” he explained.
On operational efficiency, he said: “What this does is that it saves energy and eventually costs for the client.
“The new VL UPS can guarantee a return on investment in two years or less by bringing down operational cost which means more business, especially for big companies with big data center facilities.’’
According to Schneider Electric, the key benefits of the new Galaxy VL included maximised space for critical production equipment.
Nmor said Galaxy VL was the most compact UPS in its class, 50 per cent more compact than the market average at .8 m2, meeting the demand for uninterruptible power in space-constrained industrial environments.
The manager said, Galaxy Lithium-Ion Battery Cabinets delivered total space savings of up to 70 per cent compared with VRLA battery solutions.
Nmor said it had a rugged design for harsh environments – high operating temperatures of up to 40°C, dust filters, conformal coating on critical PCBA boards, and seismic-ready system protection; saves money.
According to him, Galaxy VL’s modular, scalable platform enables one to pay-as-you-grow, reducing CapEx investment, operating costs, energy consumption, and TCO.
He said that one could scale power instantly in 50 kW increments from 200 to 500 kW with no extra footprint, NAN reports.
