The House of Representatives on Tuesday in Abuja, urged the Federal Government to quickly intervene in the flood disaster currently ravaging Sheyin community in Baruten Local Government  Area of Kwara.

This followed the unanimous adoption of a motion moved by Rep Mohammed Bio (APC-Kwara), on the need to find lasting solution to the flood affecting the community.

Moving the motion, Bio identified Sheyin community as one of the border communities in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

He recalled that a heavy rainfall from Sept. 8 to Sept. 10 resulted in the flood that wreaked havoc in the community.

According to the lawmaker, the flood left the community devastated with properties and farmlands destroyed and people rendered homeless.

“The residents have resorted to seeking refuge in neighbouring communities as the effect of the flood cannot be remedied unless there is an urgent intervention,’’ Bio said.

The House, in its resolution, urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to urgently provide relief materials to victims of the flood disaster.

The House also urged the Ecological Fund Office to take measures towards finding lasting solutions to forestall future flood occurrence in the community.

The House further mandated its committees on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness and Internally-Displaced Persons and Refugees to ensure compliance. (NAN)
