Kano govt partners NGO to mitigate effects of climate change

Kano State Government has stated its readiness to partner with a Non-Governmental Organisation, GivFree Africa, in addressing effects of climate change in the state.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Getso, made this known in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of Ministry, Mr Sanusi Kofarnaisa, on Sunday in Kano.

Getso said that the state government was very much concerned about the adverse effects of climate change on the environment in Kano State.

“The government will partner with organisations and individuals to plant trees and ensure they are grown and sustained properly by the communities,” he said.

Similarly, Alhaji Ibrahim Wala, President of Givfree Africa, said the main focus of the NGO was to create awareness and build environmental workforce in the state.

According to Wala, this will ignite the most effective tree planting exercise in many parts of the state in order to safeguard the environment against hazards.

Wala identified some of the environmental challenges that leading to climate change, particularly in Kano State to include industrial pollution, scourging heat, big-size ponds and refuse dumping sites.

He called for the conversion of ponds, littering the environment, into community gardens, orchards and parks, to address some of the health and environmental challenges.

“If this is done, we will surely have a new and fresh environmental atmosphere that will improve the health and wellbeing of the entire people of the state and beyond, thus enhancing economic growth,” he said.
