Professor Olufeagba Olabode of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has urged the federal government to invest in the Blue Economy to boost fish production and strengthen Nigeria’s food security.
Delivering the university’s 39th inaugural lecture, titled “Fish Genetics and Sustainable Aquaculture: Pathways to Food Security and Blue Economy”, Prof Olabode said Nigeria has 12.5 million hectares of inland waters suitable for fish production, with 7.5 million hectares ideal for aquaculture.
He added that the country could produce up to 2.5 million tonnes of fish annually if resources are fully deployed and managed sustainably.
Highlighting the role of genetic improvement in enhancing fish growth and sustaining aquaculture, Prof Olabode noted that fisheries and aquaculture are central to the blue economy.
He said the sector supports economic growth, job creation, and environmental sustainability.
Outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi described inaugural lectures as a reflection of the university’s intellectual strength.
He recounted some of the remarkable achievements the university has recorded under his watch, emphasizing the institution’s progress and contributions to national development.
