By Abdullahi Lukman

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has rolled out its forecast of the number of rainy days across the country in 2025, showing that Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom are expected to record between 250 and 290 rainy days.

The forecast, released on Monday in the agency’s 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction, also anticipates annual rainfall amounts ranging from 405 mm in the far north to 3,010 mm in coastal regions.

NiMet noted that rainfall across much of the country is likely to be normal to below normal compared to historical averages.

States like Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun, Ebonyi, Anambra, and Enugu are projected to have between 200 and 250 rainy days.

Central states including Niger, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, and the Federal Capital Territory will likely experience 150 to 200 rainy days.

In the Northern region, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, and Borno are forecasted to see between 110 and 150 rainy days.

These areas may receive less than 685 mm of total annual rainfall.

Meanwhile, coastal states such as Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom are expected to receive between 2,700 mm and 3,010 mm of rainfall.

NiMet also warned of significant dry spells. In Oyo State, parts such as Saki, Iseyin, and Ogbomosho may experience severe dry spells lasting more than 15 days following the onset of the rains.

Moderate dry spells of up to 15 days could affect states including Ekiti, Osun, Ondo, Ogun, Edo, Ebonyi, Anambra, and several others.

Northern states could face a severe dry spell of up to 21 days during the peak rainy months of June to August.

The 2025 rainy season is expected to end between October 6 and December 17 nationwide.
