2022 Civil Service Week: Minister urges staff on improved performance

Nigeria’s Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu, has identified himself as a team leader to commemorate the 2022 Civil Service Week in recognizing the key contributions of the civil service towards nation building and national development as the ministry honours their staff and inspires them to do more for the country.

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources joined other agencies in celebrating the staff of the ministry on Tuesday, in Abuja, at a town hall meeting.

The theme for this year’s “Civil Service Week is performance Management System (PMS) impact on productivity in Nigeria public sector.”

Adamu stated that the performance Management Service allows a mechanism for tracking the performance of employees consistently and measurably which in establishment, ensures that employees and departments across the organizations are working effectively towards achieving organization goals.

The Minister further expressed that, “as the leader of the team, it is important for me to celebrate with the staff for the good works that the ministry has recorded, without the commitment of the civil service the ministry cannot work because they are the engine room.”

Adamu stated that the ministry has introduced the rewards and reorganization system, like performance management system and operational procedures system, and others, also commended that the civil servant has been given the tools to carry out their responsibility, and everybody have sense of responsibility to do what they needed to do, however his job is to carry the team along.

Giving her welcome address, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, expressed her gratitude to the staff, stating the importance of in-ministerial cooperation and the priority in placing staff welfare in accordance to the Federal Civil Service Strategy Implementation Plan (FCSSIP) 2021 to 2025.

The Permanent Secretary further added that, the Civil Service Week is however celebrated annually in Nigeria, compliance with the 1999 Tangier Declaration by African Ministers for Public Service, which is set aside in every 23rd of June for celebration of African Public Service Day (APSD) to recognize the values and virtues of the service to the community.

Walson-Jack, applauded the staff and recommended that the nation should recognize the importance of the federal civil service towards the civil servant.

Also, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, who was represented by Mr Mbaike Chuks Nobert, Director Human Resources Management, Office of the Head of Service, applauded the team leaders, the Minister and the Permanent Secretary for putting up the activities to mark the Civil Service Day, and urged the civil servants to continue to put in their best.

She unveiled the Federal Ministry of Water Resources Staff Welfare Newsletter and added that the content of the newsletter will enhance the performance of the staff, as they carry out their duties.

The Permanent Secretary also presented the Standard Operating Procedures Manual to the Honourable Minister in the presence of the Representative of the Head of Service, other dignitaries and Staff of the Ministry.

The Ministry also indulged in sporting activities as a symbol of unity as the Permanent Secretaries of Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack and Alhaji Ismaila Abubakar performed the opening of the Novelty football Match to commemorate the 2022 Civil Service Week Celebrations.
