20 Trapped in Building Collapse in Abuja

A tragic incident unfolded in Dape, Life Camp area of Abuja as a four-storey building under construction collapsed, reportedly trapping around twenty individuals beneath the rubble.

The collapse occurred on Monday around 4:00 pm while workers were carrying out their duties at the site, which was intended to be a hotel accommodation.

According to an eyewitness, the building crumbled during the casting work, shortly after the engineer had left the premises.

Rescue operations swiftly commenced with the joint efforts of the FCT Fire Service, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigerian police.

On Tuesday morning, fire service officer Mr. Emeribe David confirmed that all involved agencies had agreed to continue the rescue operation.

The collapsed structure, identified as a hotel under construction, had entrapped an undisclosed number of laborers. David, leading the fire service team, mentioned that they received a distress call at around 4:00 pm and arrived at the scene within 15 minutes.

Collaborating with other agencies such as FEMA, Federal Road Safety Corps, and security agencies, they worked tirelessly to save those trapped within the wreckage.

While the exact number of trapped individuals remained uncertain, FEMA director-general Abass Idris reported that nine people had been successfully rescued by 7:44 pm.

The rescue efforts were set to resume in the morning to ascertain the status of other potential victims.
