140 rangers lost their lives in one year, says Conservator-General

A total of 140 rangers lost their lives globally between June 2023 and May 2024.
Conservator General of the National Park Service, Ibrahim Goni, disclosed this during this year’s celebration of World Ranger Day in Abuja, marking the 17th edition in Nigeria.
Accrding to Goni, Park Rangers faces severe challenges which include terrorism, banditry, and poaching, all resulted in the loss of rangers.
Responding to the challenges as listed by the Conservator General, the Minister for Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Lawal, efforts of Park Rangers in protecting Nigeria’s natural habitats and species.
The minister praised the management and workers of Park Rangers for their courageous and tireless work to ensure adequate protection Nigeria’s natural habitats.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Alhaji Mahmud Kambari, the minister emphasized the crucial role rangers play in addressing biodiversity loss and climate change impacts.
The event, organized by the National Park Service of Nigeria, recognized the significant contributions of rangers in safeguarding the country’s natural and cultural treasures.
Lawal acknowledged the immense difficulties in maintaining biodiversity and stressed the need for immediate action.
He praised rangers for their dedication, courage, and tireless efforts in combating environmental threats, saying, “Rangers are the driving force behind the natural solutions we seek. They embody hope and resilience amid the significant challenges we face.”
The minister Lawal honoured the commitment and vital role of rangers in achieving ambitious conservation goals, including the 30×30 conservation targets.
As the world grapples with environmental challenges, the bravery and dedication of park rangers serve as a beacon of hope for the future of the planet’s natural ecosystems.
