1000 Steps – Enugu’s moribund tourist site
By Ify Onyekwere
In recent times, much emphasis has been placed on agriculture as the industry that can revive the Nigerian economy and an alternative to stop the dependence on oil.
The tourism industry if given much attention to as well attract reasonable foreign exchange earnings.
Nigeria in time past maintained a rigid approach which narrowly defines tourism as arts and culture with little emphasis on nature and conservation. Looking closely, countries as Dubai, Kenya and South Africa have made great returns for their government in the area of tourism.
Today, tourism has evolved to become one of the fastest growing industries as it is driven by advanced technology in travel and an increased holiday culture. With an endowed geographical landscape which comprises the coastal beaches, mountains, water bodies, historical monuments, wildlife and diverse culture.
NatureNews took a tour to OkwojoNgwo, Udi in Enugu state Nigeriawith a professional tour guide, NkennaAneke who is the head of a tour-based organisation digging deep into Nigeria’s natural and yet eventful places.

“We got to a point where we could see Enugu city, the site was very nice. We did a lot of hiking and it was fun. Enugu is filled with a lot of tourist attraction and this is one of the places that should be visited,” he explained.

Another visitor, GboyegaAlabiadvised that such a place should be used as a game reserve.
In his opinion since 1000 steps is close to Enugu city people will be able to access it but will not be advisable to be used for a wildlife park.
While urban areas may boast of their glitters, there is nothing quite beautiful as nature.
One isindeed, awestruck in the presence of beautiful trees, bright water bodies and golden seaside landscape at sunrise. Perhaps the captivating presence of nature comes from the fact that it is alive.
Several African countries have increased the scope of tourism to meet global benchmarks. Nigeria should not be left behind as tourism needs to be fully tapped into.
