Yangon zoo marks 120 years with public celebrations

By Abdullahi Lukman

Celebrations to mark the 120th anniversary of Yangon Zoological Gardens, Myanmar’s oldest zoo, began on Saturday, drawing large crowds of families, school groups and longtime visitors to the historic site.

Visitors described the zoo as an important place for education and family bonding, with many recalling childhood memories.

Teachers and parents said seeing animals firsthand helps children better understand wildlife beyond textbooks, while older visitors expressed pride in the zoo’s long history and hope for its preservation.

Zoo officials highlighted the institution’s role in wildlife conservation, education and the protection of endangered species. According to the zoo’s warden, Than Myint Tun, the facility serves as both a sanctuary for animals and a learning centre for future generations, contributing to ecosystem conservation and breeding programmes.

Animal keepers also shared insights into daily care routines and long-term animal welfare. Staff members said animals in the zoo often live longer due to regular feeding, health monitoring and familiar human interaction.

The zoo currently houses about 10 red pandas, with keepers noting that some have lived far longer than they would in the wild.

As part of the anniversary, the zoo organised cultural performances, children’s activities and public engagement programmes. Regular renovations are also being carried out to upgrade facilities and meet modern standards.

Founded in 1906, Yangon Zoological Gardens is one of Southeast Asia’s oldest zoos. It is home to about 140 species of mammals, birds and reptiles, with a total population of more than 1,400 animals.
